Some more comics …

June 4, 2007 by

The last few hours of the summer school were exceptionally funny for me: All people had some fun in the night, which seemed to go on in the bus. The tour guide said funny things (stay tuned for coverage) and we were down ‘gag hunting’ virtually hungry for her words.

But there was also time for taking pictures of some thoughts:

Ambjörn’s 10 Golden PhD Rules

June 1, 2007 by

Ambjörn's 10 Golden PhD Rules #3 and #4Ambjörn was so kind to put up some basic rules for PhD students. He put them up in kind of analog wiki using post-it notes. You will find the rules in photos here, here and here. Actually the most impressing rules were number 3 and 4:

  • Resist your professor if (s)he tries to seduce you
  • Do not seduce your professor

See foto … 😀

For those interested in comics I can recommend the xkcd comic strips. They are usually related to Computer Science, Information Technology, Math and so on, check for example the map of online communities, the map of the Internet and this one.

Final Summer School Activities

June 1, 2007 by

Dear Students,

We are almost at the end of our summer school session. Here is some information about activities in the next 24 hours.

Cluster presentations:
Cluster presentations begin at 11:00. Each cluster will have 10 minutes to present their work, until 12:30

We kindly ask you to fill in an evaluation form before you leave. This information is very useful for us in planning future events.

All students will receive a certificate of participation today.

Group photo:
At 12:30 we would like to take a group photo just before lunch. We will take it on the steps between the swimming pool and the center reception area.

Free afternoon:
You may organise your afternoon as you like: continue modeling and/or your cluster groups, take advantage of the sports facilities, to into Fréjus and Fréjus plage (beach). You can inquire about public buses in the reception. You can buy a ticket at the reception.

To get to Fréjus center, there is a bus stop for Line 1 just outside the center, the stop is “Caïs Ecoles”. Take the bus to “Fréjus Paul Vernet”. There you can take Line 6 to to beach either in Fréjus or St. Raphaël.

There are Line 1 buses leaving “Caïs Ecoles” to go to Fréjus at:

I have some bus schedules for Lines 1 and 6.

As usual from 19:30 until 21:00.

The center is organising another danse night, until midnight. They have also given us entrances to a discotheque in Fréjus. Please see me if you are interested.

Taxi numbers: (Fréjus) (St. Raphaël)

+33 for France.

Two buses will leave the center tomorrow morning.

– One bus leaves at 8:00 sharp to take participants whose flights are scheduled before 12:00 directly to the airport.
– A second bus will leave at 8:30 will a guide for the city of Nice where we will have a visit until 12:00. The bus will take one group of participants to the airport at 12:00 and another group at 15:00. You can leave your luggage on the bus.

Best wishes,
Katherine Maillet

The funny side of PhD

May 31, 2007 by

You can find a really funny comic strip about PhD problems and grad student’s life in the Piled Higher and Deeper website ( It’s great to realize you are not the only one person in the world having problems with your research :-).

There are lots of comics strips already published, but most popular ones are linked in the main page. Check for example Grad Motivation Graphs, Grad Student Etiquette or Conference in Hawaii (newer ones are coloured and better drawn, but anyway they are funny).

Hope you enjoy them.
